RWANDA SAFARI (8 DAYS)

This 8 days’ safari starts and ends in Kigali. This tour takes you for the best of Rwanda; Kigali city, Akagera National Park (for a wildlife safari), Nyungwe National Park (for a primates tracking safari), Butare and Parc National des Volcans home to the rare and endangered mountain gorillas in Rwanda. This safari gives you the occasion to find out how Rwanda is gifted by nature. On this safari, go gorilla trekking in the Volcanoes National Park, track wild chimpanzees in Nyungwe Forest, visit cultural and historical sites in Butare and Kigali and go game viewing in Akagera National Park. Gorilla tracking is probably the most interesting activity. The long hike along the hills of Parc National des Volcans and seeing the gorillas from the wild is best adventure that is ommissible on this safari! Discover the fascinating mixture of game viewing, stunning scenery, cultural and historical sites and of course the magnificent mountain gorillas.

TOUR ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali
Arrive at Kanombe airport in Kigali. On arrival, meet and greet our Adventure Trails’ guide/driver and be transferred to the Hotel. Dinner and overnight at Kigali, Serena Hotel /Novotel Hotel or Okapi Hotel.

Day 2: Head to Akagera
After breakfast, you will travel around Kigali by having a city tour, visiting the central market, craft village, genocide museum and cultural visit plus the dancing pots. After lunch, you will proceed to Akagera National Park, arriving in the evening. Dinner and over night at either Akagera Game Lodge

Day 3: Morning Game Drive
After an early breakfast game drive where you will view a large variety of game in the open grasslands dotted with marshes, lakes and rivers such as Zebra, antelope, gazelle, hippo, warthog, buffalo, the diminutive oribis and secretive bushbuck and an astounding variety of bird life which come forward from the woodland to drink at the lakes, while lucky visitors might slip across a leopard, a spotted hyena or even a wandering lion.
 Relax at the Lodge and late have a canoe ride on Lake Ihema to see the large number of hippo, the huge Nile crocodile and birds. Dinner and overnight at Akagera Game Lodge

Day 4:  Transfer to Nyungwe
After breakfast, you will drive proceeding to Nyungwe National park through Butare, which is Rwanda's second city. You will visit the palace and charming National Museum. While having lunch, continue on ward past tea estates spread across the hillside to stay for two nights at the Gisakura Lodge. Arrive at Nyungwe in the evening. This is the park best known for Monkeys, chimpanzees and many other primates in Rwanda. Dinner and overnight at Gisakura Lodge

Day 5: Chimpanzee tracking
This morning you will go for chimp tracking in Nyungwe National park, enjoying a full day guided nature walk in the forest in search of the 13 recorded species of primates, including chimpanzees, large groups of Rwenzori colobus and velvet monkeys, olive baboons and grey-cheeked mangabey. Home to over 275 bird species, this is also the most important birding site in Rwanda.

Tracking is on steep slippery hillsides and viewing is unpredictable. Dinner and overnight at Gisakura Lodge on the western edge of the Nyungwe forest.

Day 6: Enroute to Parc National des Volcans
Continue north, increasingly climbing terraced hills to the Parc National des Volcans to stay for two nights at the Gorilla Nest Lodge. This charming lodge offers en-suite accommodation in bungalows around a central lawn surrounded by trees. Dinner and overnight at Gorilla Nest Lodge

Day 7: Gorilla trekking
An early morning heavy breakfast and then you take a short drive to the Headquarters of Parc National des Volcans to meet with the local guides and trackers who will give customed talks on trekking gorilla. Gorilla trekking through the green forested slopes of the Virungas is an exhilarating experience; therefore one requires strength and endurance. After spending some time observing these great apes, visit the little known but eloquently beautiful Burera and Ruhondo lakes. Dinner and overnight Gorilla Nest Lodge

Day 8: Departure
After an early breakfast, you will have forest walk to visit the Dian Fossey grave and later be transferred to Kigali airport for departure.

Virunga National Park is part of the Virunga Gorilla Conservation Area. This only gorilla park in Congo stretches along the borders of Rwanda and Uganda. Virunga National Park covers an area of 790,000 ha. The park comprises of an outstanding diversity of habitats, ranging from swamps and steppes to the snowfields of Ruwenzori at an altitude of over 5,000 m, and from lava plains to the savannahs on the slopes of volcanoes.
